Enhancing Student Experience and Support at Kenya Medical Training College
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is home to a diverse student population pursuing healthcare training. These students come from various socio-demographic backgrounds, geographical locations, economic situations, ethnicities, and educational experiences. While the majority are recent high school graduates, a significant portion consists of mature students undergoing basic or post-basic training. To facilitate a smooth transition and provide the best possible student experience, the College has implemented several strategies.
Orientation
Upon admission, students participate in a comprehensive orientation program. During this orientation, they receive guided tours of the campus, become acquainted with the student handbook and training-related policies, and learn about available services such as accommodation and meals. Additionally, they acquire essential skills, including communication, time management, mental wellness, stress management, and coping mechanisms. Orientation activities take place at both the campus and departmental levels.
Student Welfare
The College boasts a well-structured student welfare service, overseen by the Deputy Registrar of Student Affairs at the headquarters level and the Dean of Students at the campus level. This department encompasses various aspects of student life, including student support, financing, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, as well as disciplinary matters. Student support services encompass mentorship programs, counseling, chaplaincy services, and peer support systems. Student leadership, including representatives from the Student's Representative Council, class representatives, club and society leaders, and religious leaders, plays a vital role in offering psycho-social-spiritual support to fellow students. Campus-level Deans of Students coordinate these support services, and students are encouraged to seek assistance from any of these resources to ensure a smooth training experience.
Co-curricular Activities
Participation in extracurricular and co-curricular activities is highly encouraged as they contribute to a balanced and healthy student life. These activities include sports, club memberships, participation in societies, and involvement in religious organizations. They not only provide emotional and social support but also contribute to personal development.
Sports
The College hosts sporting events throughout the year, including four tournaments at the campus, zone, regional, and national levels. These tournaments offer opportunities for talent development, social interaction, networking, and fostering a sense of community within the College.
Financial Support
Financial support is available to students based on availability at any given time. The Dean of Students provides guidance on accessing funding opportunities.
Students Handbook
Given the nature of healthcare professions, students are expected to exhibit the highest levels of discipline, professionalism, and ethical practice. The student handbook serves as a guide for ethical and professional conduct, providing rules governing behavior in academic, social, and work settings. These guidelines are accessible to all students, and breaches of rules and policies are addressed through established disciplinary mechanisms at various levels, from the departments to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors.
While the transition from high school to College or from the workplace to College can be challenging, the College is committed to ensuring that each student not only achieves their educational goals but also has a rewarding and positive student experience.
