US-based organization to make KMTC managers better leaders in a five-year programme
KMTC Principals and senior managers will be better leaders following the launch in Nairobi on July 13, 2010 of a five-year program to build their capacity in leadership and management.
Sponsored by Management Science for Health, a US-based organization with funding from United States Agency for International Development, the programme also aims to develop and review the curriculum to integrate leadership and management in the KMTC's pre-service and in-service programmes.
A centre for leadership and management for the health sector will also be established at KMTC as part of the programme.
The launch of the programme, which is part of the wider capacity building initiative for all KMTC staff, also aimed at sensitizing the managers on leadership and management needs of the health sector and to get their consensus in the need for training.
The KMTC Director Dr. Olang'o Onudi said training managers in leadership is paramount.
Research shows there is a gap in the operational and management skills among health workers, particularly at the district level. "Most of the managers in institutions and in-service discover their limited management and leadership skills when they are put in or deployed to managerial posts," says a report on management and leadership development gaps for Kenya health managers presented to the workshop by Ms. Judith Aswa on behalf of the Director of Medical Services Dr. Francis Kimani.
