Defending champions lose to newcomers at KMTC Annual Sports Championships
Most defending champions lost to newcomers at the fourth edition of KMTC Annual Sports Championships which was held in Nakuru between August 1 and 5.

Finals for men's football were held between two newcomers – Kisumu and Nyeri – after last year's finalists – Webuye and Nairobi – were knocked out at different stages of the tournament. To reach the finals, Kisumu defeated Msambeni 2-1at the knockout stage while Nyeri beat Nairobi 4-3, runners up in last year's finals. Nairobi vented their anger on Msambweni, thrashing them 5-2. Webuye, the defending champions did not feature at the finals, having lost at the zonal stage to Kisumu.

Defending champions Kapkatet ladies got a thrashing from Embu in ladies soccer. Anita Biwott scored for Nakuru in the first half to clinch the bronze trophy in a match between Kitui.

Kisumu easily beat Nyeri 28-10 in rugby 7s finals. Siaya, who were the defending champions, had lost in the zonal stage to Kisumu. To reach the finals, Kisumu beat Nakuru 22-5 at the preliminaries before eliminating Machakos 57-0 at the knockout stage. Nyeri beat Machakos 29-0 and Nakuru26-0 at the two stages respectively.

In rugby 15s, Muranga MTC dominated Nairobi 10 – 3 in a match in which Captain Musa and Ochieng scored a try each. Defending champions Siaya MTC were eliminated before the finals. In rugby 7s, Nyeri thrashed Nakuru 26 – 0 as Kisumu thrashed Machakos 57.0. The finals will be held between Kisumu and Nyeri.

Women handball finals – defended by Machakos MTC –pitted two other newcomers – Port Reitz MTC and Webuye. PortReitz won 11-9.

Adeline Amukosi scored 14 points for Kakamega to triumph over Nakuru 31-19 while the towering Port Reitz's John Madowo scored 20 to thrash Nyeri 49-26 in the basketball finals for women and men respectively. Kakamega ladies, who were defending the trophy, outshone Nairobi 66-27 to clinch third position. Kisumu men were the defending champions.

Nyeri clinched the netball cup 27-26 in a tense match between Webuye. Nairobi beat Port Reitz to clinch the bronze trophy. Siaya were the defending champions.

In women's volleyball, Thika MTC, the defending champions, overcame the resistance from Kitui to win 3 – 2. Siaya beat Nairobi 3-2. Nairobi MTC beat Thika 3-1. They will meet the winner between Siaya and Kitui in the finals.

Eldoret led Mombasa, followed by Webuye in darts for men while the best teams for women came from Meru and Lodwar.

KMTC Director Dr Olang'o Onudi, the event's chief guest, presented trophies to the winners. The one- week event, which was officially opened by Nakuru Town MP and Assistant Minister for Roads Hon. Lee Kinyanjui, started with athletics at Afraha Stadium.
