HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Siaya Medical Training College is a community supported institution that came up through community felt needs. In 1989, the community realized that there was high mortality and mobility rates within the district coupled with heavy shortages of appropriate medical staff to work both at the District Hospital and Rural Health facilities. Hence need to establish a Health Training Institution within the community to improve their health and their health care services. Between the year 2002 -2005 August, the community aggressively followed up the matter with the Ministry of Health and a lot of communication were made at all levels including director of health services Ministry of Health Headquarters and the Director-Kenya Medical Training College Nairobi in conjunction with the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health and all those who could assist the community in development of the same. During this time the following activities took place:
Renovation of the existing Buildings
During this time the old buildings previously belonging to Siaya district Hospital were renovated.
The Kenya Medical Training College Siaya Land
The College acquired its land through the hospital and community as mentioned above which is 4.571hactares and the community through other stake holders gave another additional land of Two (2) hectare in September 2006. This land therefore is 16.243,512 acres
Construction of new structures
The College had only one classroom from the acquired buildings by December 2005 but because there was need for expansion and having a new department (Nursing) by March 2006, the members of stake holders joined hands with the Members of Parliament and got some funds from the three constituencies (Alego/Usonga, Gem, and Ugenya Constituencies) at a rate of Kshs 500,000 per constituency spread out through the year. Therefore in the year 2006, the community contributed a total of Kshs.1.5million to put up more classrooms.
District Development Committee & the College Development
The college is a member of the above mentioned committee which is under the Chairmanship of the District Commissioner where all the Developmental proposals by the stakeholders pass through and it has always been very cooperative in making sure that the Kenya Medical Training College Siaya develops constantly.
The Current Plan (2008/2009)
The college urgently requires four large classrooms. The building committee members have approached the respective community development committees in both constituencies to assist in putting up these classrooms. A proposal has been developed and those Community Development Fund (CDF) committees are in agreement of doing just that before the end of the year 2008. The total cost is estimated at Kshs. 5million.
