Meru Medical Training College was established in January 1979 as a department of Nursing. It was mandated to train Kenya enrolled community health nursing (Pre-service certificate) course.
In 1987, another department of Medical Engineering was established to train technicians (Pre-service certificate) for maintenance of medical equipment. Although they were founded by Ministry of Health, the two departments then were adjacent to each other but managed independently.
In 1996, the departments were merged and became Kenya Medical Training College – Meru. This was done to cut down operational costs.
Three years later, the college was up-graded to train basic diploma course in nursing - Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing.
The college continued to expand and in September 2006, the college established a basic diploma pre-service course in Clinical Medicine.
The college is situated is situated about 1 km off town centre via hospital road within Meru Municipality, about 240 kilometres from Nairobi city, using Nairobi – Embu - Maua road. It borders Meru District Hospital.
In September 2008, the college went a notch higher, introducing another basic diploma course in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Currently, the college has four academic departments namely:-

The college has a population of 772 students. About 500 are accommodated in the college hostels while the rest are non-residents.
The college has three main blocks of hostels namely:
There are two dinning halls currently serving the students however, the collage is looking foward to expanding them as the student population grows.
The games available at the institution are:
• Basket ball (men & women)
• Football (men & women)
• Table tennis (men & women)
• Badminton (men & women)
The College's student representative council has very active members, who provide the necessary link between administration, staffs and students.
The council also co-coordinates extra curricula activities, including sports, clubs and societies.
