BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CAMPUS
Kisumu Medical Training College opened its door as a formal training institution for nurses in 1953.In those early years, it catered for a total of about forty five students out of whom less than ten qualified in a year. The institution has expanded over the years to having more than seven hundred students with an annual output of three hundred trained manpower. Presently, Kisumu Medical Training College is one of the largest provincial Training Institutions in the country. It has two campuses (the upper campus and the lower campus) and six departments namely:
- Nursing
- Environmental Health Sciences
- Medical Laboratory Sciences
- Clinical Medicine
- Medical Imaging Sciences
- The Business Unit – offers a course in Higher Diploma in Community Health and H.I.V AIDS care.
LOCATION
Kisumu Medical Training College upper campus is located at Kondele on Kisumu-Kakamega road and is approximately two kilometers from Kisumu town. The lower campus is based at Kisumu District Hospital just opposite Jomo Kenyatta sports ground.

DINING AND HOUSING
Kisumu Medical Training College has two accommodation units for students. The upper campus accommodates female students. It has 192 rooms with a bed capacity of 382.The lower campus on the other hand accommodates male students. It has 86 rooms with a total bed capacity of 254. There is also a kitchen and dining hall in both the upper and lower campuses where students' meals are prepared and served during meal times.
UNIQUENESS OF KISUMU MEDICAL TRAINING COLLEGE
The college has a business unit that is now running courses on Home Based Care (HBC).The courses include short courses and a Diploma validated by Kenya Medical Training College Nairobi to train District Home based care co-coordinators and lecturers of Medical Training Colleges. Already trained is Medical Training College staff in Kakamega, Thika and Nairobi. The business unit also runs a guest house that has guest rooms with a total capacity of thirty six and a restaurant where guest meals are prepared and served. There is also a resource centre that has modern computers and internet connection where students and staff can get study materials through research over the internet as well as photocopy, typing and printing services.
SPORTS
Kisumu Medical Training College participates in sports annually. The College participates in the Zonal, Regional and National sports competitions. The sports that the College participates in includes Basketball,Volleyball,Handball,Netball,Football,Hockey,Rugby,Darts,Long Tennis,Scrabble,Chess,Table Tennis, Badminton and Draughts. Kisumu Medical Training College has been a champion in Men's Basketball at the National Level. This was in the year 2009 in Mombasa.
STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
Kisumu Medical Training College has a Students Representative Council. The Council has a patron and elected officials. It is in charge of students' welfare in the College and the officials meets with the administration to inform them about the SRC activities such as cultural day. The SRC is governed by the SRC constitution and elections are held annually to elect officials. Apart from the annual elections, there are also by elections incase of death, resignation, Physical or mental infirmity, cessation of studentship or a decision of the election petitions committee. The Kisumu Campus SRC has an account with National Bank of Kenya and the signatories are the chairman, Secretary General and the Treasurer. The principal acts as the 4th signatory to represent the administration or the patron. The SRC officials or ministers are then issued with certificates at the end of their terms. The officials or ministers are the students representative in the College.
