KMTC sports day
This year's KMTC sports finals will be held in Kisumu City between July 26 and 30.
The one-week event, the College's third edition since it established sports in 2008, will be opened by the Minister for Medical Services Hon. Prof. Anyang Nyong'o on July 27.
The annual event, which will be held at Kisumu Polytechnic, brings together all the 28 KMTC colleges to fight it out in athletics and ballgames.
The finals will be a culmination of competitions that were done at three levels: At the first level, each of the 28 campuses selected its team. The Colleges, which were put in eight zones, then played in a league approach at the regional level to raise points. Four KMTC regions, formed out of the eight zones, will meet at the finals, each presenting winning teams for competitions.
Various disciplines, including athletics and soccer, volleyball, basketball, rugby, handball and netball will attract competitions.
Both the Board Chairman Prof. Julius Meme and the College Director Dr. Olang'o Onudi, who are expected to lead staff and students at the venue, have wished participating teams success in their preparations.
In this era of HIV/Aids and drug abuse, Prof. Meme says games will occupy the students, leaving less time for engaging in anti-social behaviour, and help them stem the two pandemics.
Prof. Meme says the Board appreciates that taking part in regular sport "advances a student's mental and physical fitness, therefore, improving the quality of their education as well as keeping at bay various diseases caused by modern day sedentary lifestyle."
Dr. Onudi underscores the importance of sports at the College: "Sports goes a long way in improving the performance of students and, ultimately, the service delivery to the Kenyan population."
"The reason why we spend time and money on sports is to ensure that our students not only receive medical knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to change the lives of patients but also exploit untapped potential in their social lives," adds the Director.
